Best Electric Can Opener

Looking for the best electric can opener? Let our buyers guide and review list show you the models on the market that will best suit your needs and make opening cans a breeze.

Kitchens across the United States are full of gadgets big and small, some useful and others not so much. While they all tend to sit unused for long periods of time jammed into a drawer, there is one that stands out for its regularity of use—the can opener.

From fruits and vegetables to beans, broth, and all manner of soups, the can opener is there to make quick work of getting into these tin containers. Unfortunately, the can opener that probably first comes to mind and is more than likely the one you use is the hand-cranked, manual version.

The manual can opener can be challenging to operate at some times and downright impossible at others. Half opened cans, jagged edges, and a lot of frustration. In other words, a chore to use. We haven’t even mentioned the pain they can cause to your culinary hands. Thankfully, we live in the 21st century. The 21st century has electric can openers.

Granted, moderately effortless can openers have been around for some time, but those older models were often bulky eyesores. The market is now full of svelte, stylish options that tuck away neatly on your counter or under a cabinet or even in a drawer.

In recent years, we've seen the introduction of the next evolution of electric can openers, the one button touch model. A hybrid of sorts, the one-touch openers are a cross between the modern handheld openers and the stand-up versions we previously mentioned.

Before we get into our reviews for the best electric can openers, let’s take a closer at what each of these model types has to offer and some things to look out for before making a purchase.

Electric Can Opener Comparison Table

Electric Can Opener Buyers Guide

We call them traditional, but the modern stand-up can opener is anything but old school. Gone are the boxy, mustard and harvest yellow versions that once dominated kitchen counters across the United States.

Compact, with a lot of power to spare, upright electric can openers have a far more sensible design. The sleeker profiles reflect their purpose of actually opening something in the shape of a cylinder instead of a square. Many model lines also come in numerous colors, which allow you to match the gadget to your kitchen's style scheme.

Beyond the looks, the main point of getting an electric can opener is how well does it open up cans. There are few things to look for when figuring out which one will work best for you.

Best Overall

Hamilton Beach (76606ZA) Smooth Touch Electric Automatic Can Opener...
  • Opens pop-top & regular cans
  • No more sharp lid edges - cuts can along the side for smooth, touchable lid
  • Easy-touch opening lever - a light touch is all that's needed

This electric can opener is a top choice for a multitude of reasons, but the main one is it works well.

This Hamilton Beach model measures nine inches tall but has a sleek black and chrome design that looks good on any kitchen counter. If you choose to store it, however, the cord retracts and makes finding space for it less cumbersome than other electric kitchen tools.

As for the performance, again, it tops our list for a reason. A large pushdown leaver and solid base mean you open up medium to large size cans with ease. The soft edge cut is another plus, eliminating sharp, dangerous lids.

The model it replaced, the 76606Z, was an equally high performer, with solid reliability. Hamilton Beach knows what they are doing with this product line.

Yes, there may be other options that handle a bit more volume or look a little nicer, but when all of the elements are combined, for daily household use, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better all-around option.

Best One Touch

One touch openers get a lot of things right, and the Sokos Electric Can Opener is tops among them.

A small yet functional design, this little opener is very easy to handle and requires practically no effort to position onto a can. Once in place is when the magic happens. At the touch of a button, the Sokos works its way around the lid of the can creating a re-sealable, soft edge cut.

Perhaps not as robust as other plugin options, this battery-powered opener is ideal for many situations.

Arthritic hands love it, as there is little effort in getting it to perform its task with no handling or turning of the can. The Sokos is small enough to fit in your hand, which makes it perfect for a tiny kitchen that can’t spare the counter space for a stand-up opener. Or if you’re looking to keep a big kitchen neat and tidy, it easily stores in a drawer.

This option is intended for light to moderate use so keep that mind when making your purchase. Otherwise, the Sokos is a neat little, gadget for getting those cans opened in a snap.

Best Heavy Duty

Hamilton Beach 76380Z Classic Chrome Heavyweight Can Opener, Black
  • Removable, washable cutting unit
  • SureCutTM patented technology opens cans the first time, every time
  • Knife sharpener, Automatic shutoff

If you need your can opener to be a workhorse, then let’s revisit Hamilton Beach for their high capacity electric can opener.

The 76380Z has a broader body shaped like an iron that gives it a much sturdier feel than other models. The cutting mechanism is the traditional top edge variety, though it does make swift work of any can you need to be opened.

It has a retractable cord, which is great when you want to store it away in a cabinet, and a nifty knife sharpener on the back of the unit. However, the proximity of the sharpener to where the cord retracts could have been better thought out. It goes without saying to leave the unit unplugged when sharpening a knife.

Aside from that small design flaw, the 76380Z is a great heavy use model for more active kitchens.

Best Space Saver

Black & Decker CO100 Spacemaker Traditional Multi-Purpose Can Opener,...
  • Handy bottle opener
  • Built-in knife sharpener
  • Useful bag cutter

Don’t let the mouthful of a product description fool you. The Black and Decker CO100B truly is convenient as an out of the way tool for your kitchen.

A modern update of 80’s era under the cabinet models, this multi-purpose electric opener comes in a compact, albeit brick-like, outer shell that opens up to reveal the lever and cutting mechanism. One drawback to the design is the traditional top lid cutting method.

Five inches tall by seven and a half inches wide, the CO100B saves space by installing under one of your cabinets. Black and Decker have cornered the market on under cabinet appliances, and this can opener is arguably the most practical of their Spacemaker product line. This is especially true for a kitchen where a lot of canned goods are opened on a fairly regular basis.

This electric can opener also has a couple of side tools, including bottle and bag openers and a knife sharpener. Though not for everyone, if you are a regular consumer of canned goods, or live in a family that is, this is a nice kitchen addition to keep your counters clear of clutter.

Best Budget Model

Cuisinart CCO-50BKN Deluxe Electric Can Opener, Black
  • Electric can opener with precision Power Cut blade
  • Press-and-release lever for easily opening any standard-size can
  • Extra-wide base prevents sliding or tipping; stops automatically

This snappy little model harkens back to the simpler electric can openers with the small lever and loose hanging lid magnet. The Cuisinart CCO-50BKN is about as straightforward and no-frills as it gets.

The cutting mechanism cuts from the top, but its hard to expect a soft-edge cut in this segment. It does handle all can sizes very well, and its tall, slender footprint easily stores away when not in use.

You won’t wow too many folks with this little gadget, but they may be impressed with your skills with finding a high quality can opener at an extremely low price.

Bonus Recommendation – Best Industrial/Restaurant Grade Model

We made mention earlier of people that might run their own catering or food truck business. With both endeavors being high small business growth areas, we wanted to include an electric can opener for you or anyone else in the food and restaurant industry.

By no means cheap, the Edlund is made of stainless steel, stands a foot tall, and weighs close to fifteen pounds. If you open a lot of cans (and really, we mean a lot of cans), this two-speed monster will cut your can opening time in half.

Obviously, this isn’t a practical option for your typical household kitchen (unless you have to feed a brood of twenty), but it makes plenty of sense if food is your livelihood and you want to focus less time on the tedious tasks involved in running that business.

Conclusion

Electric can openers are the unsung heroes of the modern-day kitchen. They make a cumbersome task simple and rank near the top of the most used culinary gadget list.

Unlike the days of old, the variety of electric can openers has grown considerably. From the daily use plugin versions, to easily stowed battery cutters, to even a few specialty openers there are plenty of options in the marketplace to meet every need.

With a little time and effort and of course our handy list as a guide, you’ll have no problem cutting through the crowd to find the electric can opener that works best for you.
